Potter and Tioga Counties stand side by side at the top of the state in the central northern tier of PA. This is an area of rolling hills, farmlands, and forests of great natural beauty. They provide all types of outdoor, four season recreation.

Potter County is known as God’s Country. A place of meandering trout streams, it boasts of being the headwaters of three great rivers; the Alleghany flows south to join the Mississippi and empties into the Gulf of Mexico; the Genesee flows north to the Saint Lawrence and the North Atlantic; the Susquehanna travels south to the Atlantic

Many know Potter County for its prime hunting, fishing, skiing, and snowmobiling. Backpackers and day hikers flock to the The Susquehanna Trail system which ajoins the PA Lumber Museum. This remote area was said to be inhospitable to the native Americans, so they had no permant settlements there, and only passed through on their way to better places.

Scene Near Potter Brook, PA, Circa 1900

The night sky is protected in Potter County because of the darkness and the Cherry Springs sky watching facility is said to be the best place on the east coast for amateur astronomers to to watch the stars. Having only 4 traffic lights and more deer than people, it is home to two of the smallest schools in PA and a total of 5 districts.

To the east lies Tioga County with its larger population. Pine Creek and its rapids cut through the mountains to form the spectacular PA Grand Canyon. A new bike trail follows the creek where the railroad used to run. Wellsboro, the county seat, is known statewide for the Laurel Festival in June and Dickens of a Christmas, an outside December event. Mansfield University, home of the first football game under lights, is in eastern Tioga. Wellsboro is home to the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The Tioga-Hammond and Cowanesque dams provide recreation as well as protection from floods on the Susquehanna.

Though small in number of students, both counties have distinquished themselves in district and state tournaments for their prowess in sports. It is in this pristine setting, devoid of malls and traffic jams, that Potter -Tioga Chapter works and plays.

Come visit us! And if you are a retired school employee living in this area, come join us -- we've been waiting for you!
